Continuing our run of letting you know a little more about as many of the bands on at Bloodstock 2025 as we possibly can before you get a chance to see them, we have Surya. This bunch play on the New Blood Stage on the Sunday.
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Leeds.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
The current line-up has been around since 2020, that’s when our current sound and reformation of the band took place.
Where does the name of the band come from?
Surya (Suh-Ree-Yah) is translated to ‘Sun’ in Sanskrit we thought it was a cool juxtaposition to the often dark and dystopian names of a lot of metal bands
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Our music is quite a blend of different genres, however we believe it to be a Groove based Modern Deathcore, there are also some tech influences in there. We have been compared to bands such as Orbit Culture, Currents and a bit of Bleed from Within.
Our uniqueness comes from our vastly different influences of each band member that has created a melting pot of sounds, this has culminated in every song we put out not conforming to a strict genre, however there is a distinct ‘Surya’ sound that flows throughout.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
Energy, fun and professionalism, we involve the crowd at every step of the show, we like to have fun and we think this comes across in our performance, we are often approached by people who say… “It’s nice to see a band truly enjoying what they do”.
Walls of death and mosh pits are however still a part of every single set regardless of how happy we are.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
Only Mark has, for the rest of us this is the first time! Mark has performed there with a previous band way back in 2018, he recalls it being the friendliest and smoothest running festival he’s ever been to. He can’t wait to go back ‘Home’ when we play on the Sunday.
Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?
We invaded and won the Burnley region all the way from our usual Leeds stomping grounds.
Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?
Amazed, totally humbled and grateful for everyone that supports us.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
A varied set from old to brand new, relentless, heavy and full of catchy riffs and brutal breakdowns, not a moment to catch your breath.
Stage times haven’t been announced yet, so which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?
We hope we don’t clash with August Burns Red, Thrown or Rivers of Nihil. We would rather be in the pit to these!
What are you working on at the moment?
Multiple tracks and the completion of our second EP, we have a total of 4 songs on the go at the moment with 2 very near completion. Every song means new artwork and usually a new music video, so we’re working on that too. We are also tirelessly putting ourselves out into the ether and communicating with promoters to snag some bigger live shows, such as our gig with Raised By Owls on Halloween in Leeds at DMC Brewery… that should be fun. We are also hunting down festival opportunities, tours and weekenders for our post Bloodstock appearance. We are always super busy.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Many years ago we had an audience member carry a Sofa into the middle of the mosh pit. It was interesting to see and quite confusing for both us and the rest of the people in the pit.
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
It depends on the person, but a lot of Water right before we play. Nik usually drinks a Red Bull; Joey likes a Coors. Mark will have a Guinness and Tom will knock back a Relentless.
Nothing too messy as we like to keep our performance tight, the hard stuff usually comes after.
