Road to Bloodstock: Maatkare

Continuing our run of letting you know a little more about as many of the bands on at Bloodstock 2025 as we possibly can before you get a chance to see them, we have Maatkare. This bunch play on the EMP Stage on the Sunday.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re actually quite spread out! Our vocalist is from the Netherlands and the rest of us are in Birmingham, Brighton and Sunderland.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

The band was formed in 2020 and we solidified our current lineup with the addition of Nat on drums in 2024.

Where does the name of the band come from?

Maatkare derives from ancient Egypt and is actually one of the titles female Pharaoh Hatshepsut wore (amongst others) and it means The Truth Is The Soul Of The Sun God.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We all have very different musical influences, so we bring a mixture of melodic, old school and blackened death metal. Lyrically, our goal is to bring light to some of the forgotten female icons through history and tell their story through themes of female empowerment.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

We love having fun on stage, so you can expect plenty of wholesome vibes, lots of headbanging and above all, showcasing our friendship and hopefully empowering other girls, gays and theys to do what they love.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

Our bassist and guitarist are firm veterans of Bloodstock and our bassist has played several stages with their other projects in the past. We love that Bloodstock gives a platform to independent and unsigned artists to support the metal scene in the UK. We always have a great time there.

When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?

Bloodstock was always part of our touring plans for this year, so after adding it to our booking list, we were very excited to see the email come in from Simon Hall to offer us a slot.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

We released our debut album in October, so we’ll be pulling out our favourites from that to share with our fans.

Stage times haven’t been announced yet, so which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

Although stage times haven’t been announced, day splits have and we are very pleased to see that we will have a chance to see our good friends in Tiberius, Rites To Ruin, Crown Solace, Fortune Teller and LN.

What are you working on at the moment?

We are about a third of the way through writing album 2, which we’re very excited about and will also be looking at the festival and live circuit for next year.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

We like to think that we’re pretty wild on the road, highlights include service station picnics, bringing our own teabags and ensuring there’s a nook or cranny for our drummer Nat to take a pre-show nap in (very important).

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

A hefty mix of Vocalzone tea, good old English tea, and water!
