It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Solar Sons who play the Jagermeister stage on the Saturday.
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We are from Dundee, Scotland and originally hail from the Elgin area in Moray.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
This year marks our 8th year together as a band. So about 8 years, gone by quick!
Where does the name of the band come from?
We were exchanging ideas for names with a bit of a cosmic vibe, and Solar Sons was our favourite. It kind of relates to the idea that we are all on a massive flying space rock. Far out but true!
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
A lot of our sound is the classic three-piece power trio vibe. What we feel makes us unique is our transitions in style from heavy riff based groovy tunes, interweaved with psychedelic passages, lead breaks and all sorts of other cool moments.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
Full of headbanging and fist pumping moments, a bit of a journey through the Earthly realm of the cosmos, and hopefully a kick ass experience for all!
Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
We’ve been and played before as a band in 2017 when we won the Inverness leg of the Metal 2 the Masses tour. It was fucking GREAT! Loved it and we can’t wait to return.
When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?
We were invited to play as past winners for a guest headliner slot at the Edinburgh, Metal 2 the Masses final in 2022. Being there to play without the pressure of being in the competition was a cool experience. Every band was awesome, but we were really chuffed for our pals and fellow Dundee band – Catalysis who won that night. Also, the extremely cool – Certain Death got a Jager spot on the bill and that was great to see too. It was really awesome catching up with Simon from Bloodstock, and Paul from Slow Dragon did a pro job with the Scotland leg, it was so ace to see the scene out in support, many friends were caught up with and new ones made too!
We found out about two weeks later that we also had been invited to play the Jägermeister Stage, we were absolutely over the moon!

What sort of setlist can we expect?
Gonna try keep our setlist pretty intense and high energy for the Bloodstock crowd. We have some chunky new material that we are really excited about playing live, so expect some new stuff, older heavy hitters and a set full of super tasty tunage!
Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?
Really excited to see Testament again, they are playing the Friday night. We are playing on the Saturday so no clash there. Definitely excited to see some hot new talent on the new blood stage so hopefully we are not clashing with anyone we really want to check out. Last time it was Annihilator on the main stage when we were playing the new blood. Chuffed we still pulled a really decent crowd!
What are you working on at the moment?
We have recently had a week in the studio at Deep Storm Productions, recording our 5th album. We are extremely excited about sharing the music and super happy with the results. Amazing studio and we laid down everything live, so it has that undeniable live feeling and energy in spades. Can’t wait to share! Will definitely debut some new stuff live at Bloodstock! More details about our new album will be coming out over the next couple months.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Dunno what you are talking about we are all extremely well behaved!! Nah we’ve seen some stuff man, haha. Steaming and dressed up as 3 voodoo dudes for a double Halloween show a while ago was a good one. Someone’s beer spilling on the small PA at a bar gig years ago and rushing back to our practice space to grab our PA to keep the show rolling. One time a thunderstorm cut the power during a show we were playing in Dundee. Somehow our practice space still had power so we rallied everyone there, via Tesco for beer and continued the show! The show must go on!! Those are some memorable ones but many more will probs pop into our minds once we send this!
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
Beer generally! Good ol water is never far away though, and the occasional red bull or coke if needed (add liquor of choice). But always have a piss before you go on!
