Atmospheric doom duo The Answer Lies In The Black Void have revealed a unique reimagining of the Massive Attack classic “Angel”. The track is the second single taken from the upcoming Pelagic Records compilation, The Dungeon Tapes, which features previously unreleased music and covers from the label’s roster.
For multi-instrumentalist Jason Köhnen, the choice of song is deeply personal. It is dedicated to his musical mentor, Carlton Franklin – an “old-school” DJ who used the hypnotic darkness of the original track to masterfully control the mood of his mid-90s sets. Following a terminal illness diagnosis, Franklin’s final act was a crowdfunding campaign titled “Dead Man Sailing,” allowing him to take one last voyage across the Atlantic.
This cover drenches the original’s trip-hop foundations in the crushing weight of doom and post-rock. While Martina’s vocals stay close to the haunting lines of Horace Andy, the music expands into a vast, transcendental soundscape defined by slow-burning distortion and climactic explosions. The accompanying video offers a gothic interpretation of the original storyline, adapted to the band’s own unique setting.
The Dungeon Tapes will also include contributions from Psychonaut, Lost In Kiev, and Spook The Horses, as well as a special My Bloody Valentine cover by the collective Pelagic United. The compilation is set for physical release on 28th August, with digital following on 18th September. Stream and pre-order the whole thing now.
