Los Angeles alt-rockers Return to Dust are back with a bit of a surprise, dropping an explosive cover of the OutKast classic “Hey Ya!”. While the 2003 original is a feel-good pop anthem, the quartet – Matty Bielawski, Graham Stanush, Sebastian Gonzalez, and London Hudson – have given it a proper rock ‘n’ roll makeover. With synth production from Mat Mitchell of Puscifer, they’ve managed to turn that “shake it like a Polaroid picture” energy into something much darker and gloomier.
The band explained that their roots go far beyond just rock, and they wanted to put their own heavy spin on the 00s mega-hit. It’s a bold move, but considering their latest single “Bored” has been sitting pretty at the top of the Active Rock charts, they’ve certainly got the momentum behind them.
The release of the cover coincides with a massive summer schedule. The lads are currently tearing across the U.S. before heading over to our side of the pond for major slots at Download Festival and support dates with Breaking Benjamin and Chevelle. To top it all off, they’ve just announced an exclusive, intimate headline show at London’s Camden Assembly this July. If you want to see the next generation of rock revival in the flesh, this is the one.
