Swedish glam rockers Lipz have decided to take a trip back to the late 80s for their latest single. The band have just released a beefed-up cover of Paula Abdul’s massive hit “Straight Up”, out now via Frontiers Music Srl. If you were expecting a synth-pop dance routine, think again – the band have well and truly swapped the drum machines for roaring guitars.
The band haven’t just played it safe here. They’ve stripped the pop classic down to the bones and rebuilt it as a proper arena-sized rock anthem. While those catchy melodies we all know are still there, the energy has been cranked up to eleven. It’s a bold move taking on such an iconic pop track, but the guys have managed to make it sound like it belonged on a sunset strip stage all along.
The Lipz story actually kicks off back in 2011 with brothers Alexander and Koffe Klintberg, alongside guitarist Conny Svärd. It took a bit of time for the line-up to settle, especially when it came to finding a permanent bassist, but Alexander eventually stepped up to handle frontman duties and shaped the sound we hear today. After dropping their debut single “Ghost Town” in 2012 and the Psycho EP a few years later, they’ve been on a steady climb.
Linking up with Frontiers Records in 2023 was a big turning point for the group, leading to the release of their latest album, Changing The Melody, back in March 2024. This new cover shows they aren’t afraid to have a bit of fun while keeping that high-voltage glam rock spirit alive. You can check out the official video for “Straight Up” now to see the transformation for yourself.
