Headline Act: The Karma Effect

Fresh off the announcement of their third studio album, The Karma Effect are a band firmly on the rise, blending vintage ’70s swagger with a sharp, modern edge. Despite being spread across the UK, the quintet has cultivated a stadium-sized live show and a cohesive sound rooted in a shared love for rock legends like Aerosmith and The Black Crowes. With their new record Cruel Intentions slated for a May release and a massive headline tour on the horizon, the band is proving that their disciplined approach to rock’n’roll is exactly what today’s audiences are craving.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Right now we are based all over the place. Nate and Tom are up in the Midlands, Robbie is in Essex, Alan is in Brighton and I am in the Surrey suburbs. This makes it a little interesting when we are planning our adventures and what work we are taking on, but we rise to the challenge. One thing I realised as we grew as a band is our location doesn’t matter so much anymore. When you are kids being five minutes from one another means everything, but as an established touring act we have pretty strict routines and diaries which factor in all the time we need for rehearsals, pre-production, recording etc.

How long have you been playing as a band?

The Karma Effect as a band has been going for five years, with Robbie and myself as the original guys. As this line-up we are just over a year old now, young and full of energy.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We get asked this question a lot… and there is a very simple answer. I just thought it was really cool. I read it in a book many moons ago and I wrote it down. When it came to put this band together I just named it that, and it stuck. Here we are, all these years later, and it seems to have done the trick. We have built a strong brand/band around it!

What are your influences?

This band is a melting pot of influences as each member has their own preferred bands and artists they listen to which inspire them when they come to play or create. There is no denying that this band’s sound has been formed via a shared love of Aerosmith and The Black Crowes. They were really the blueprint for what we wanted this band to be like and sound like. But you can’t deny the other honourable mentions – Zeppelin, Stones, Humble Pie, Bad Company… I could go on forever. But really, at the end of the day, you can love all this stuff but when you all play together you find your own unique sound and voice, which I believe is what makes us, us!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

To elaborate on what I just said, I think having influences is important but really a group of individuals coming together is automatically going to be unique in some way to another band. If it’s the way I sing or phrase, or how Alan holds the groove, Robbie’s style of playing, it all makes you unique. I think for us, the big thing is bringing a vintage rock vibe straight out of the ‘70s and transporting it to 2026 – sharpen it up for today’s audience, but give them the nostalgia element people love in their music.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Lyrics are often the hardest part of a song and really rely on the emotion the music is putting out. I am not from the Bernie Taupin/Elton John camp of ‘write lyrics and make a song around it’ – to me that seems alien as I need to be inspired by a tune. So really the lyrical themes stem from what the music is conveying. We like to make people feel good and tap into that.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We like our live show to be exactly that – a show. When you come to see us, it’s not a band playing some songs at a gig. We want section changes, segues, light shows, solos… everything you would expect from a stadium gig. We have always since day one tried to create that… and I think we have a great show that people love to watch.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I mean we’ve seen and done a few wild things in our time, but onstage we take it pretty seriously. I think the craziest was trying to defuse quite a bad punch-up because people were pushing to get to the front to see us. We don’t condone any violence at all but, you gotta admit, it was kind of surreal that people could have that reaction.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

We are really proud to be working with Gibson guitars, which is a boyhood dream for Robbie and I. All my heroes have played a Gibson so to be part of the family is a real trip. We also love our Victory Amplifiers as well, which we are currently proudly representing on the road. They sound incredible and give us everything we need for that classic rock tone.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We currently have our third studio album Cruel Intentions ready and waiting to come out on the 15th May. We are SO excited to share this album with everyone. It’s by far and away our best record this band has worked on, and we can’t wait for people to hear it. As well as that we’ve got a huge headline tour later this year which is on sale now, so basically the rock’n’roll circus is about to take off!

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

We are basically going to be putting ourselves out on the road and playing as many shows as we possibly can, right across the UK and Europe.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Currently we are loving Parker Barrow and also The Band Feel. Both incredible bands from across the pond.

The Karma Effect’s new album ‘Cruel Intentions’ is out 15th May via Earache Records – pre-order here. The band have also just announced a UK headline tour for autumn 2026, with tickets on-sale now via Bands In Town.
