Veins: The Top 5 Tracks That Shaped Our Sound

We exclusively caught up with British alternative rock trio Veins, who have just returned with their engrossing new single and video, “Sunlight” (scroll aaaaall the way to the bottom for the video or click here to stream it). The band is currently gearing up to unleash their highly anticipated debut album, A New Forever, on Friday, 5th June. To celebrate the release, we asked the alt crew to list the five tracks that have most heavily influenced their captivating sound:

1. Deftones – “Change (In the House of Flies)”

We all come from quite different musical backgrounds, but Deftones are one of the bands that have had an influence on us all. Heavy, atmospheric, melodic, moody, and dynamic—these are all elements that we love and that run through our sound, too.

2. Sigur Rós – “Glósóli”

“Glósóli” comes from Sigur Rós’ fourth album, Takk…, which has had a big influence on the more post-rock elements of Veins. This is especially true when it comes to the way we use layers of atmospheric guitars, strings, and synths.

3. Joy Division – “Transmission”

As a three-piece with atmospheric guitars, the bass fills a lot of the space, leading to us having quite prominent bass throughout many of our songs. Our bass player, Scott, definitely takes that influence from people like Peter Hook from Joy Division and Simon Gallup from The Cure.

4. The Smashing Pumpkins – “Tonight, Tonight”

The Pumpkins have had a big influence on our frontman Stevie’s writing. While we’re probably influenced more by the Siamese Dream era, we’ve picked “Tonight, Tonight” from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness because it’s a banger and the orchestral element is something that has helped shape the Veins sound.

5. Misery Signals – “The Failsafe”

Whilst this might not seem like an obvious influence on the surface, Branden Morgan from Misery Signals has had the biggest influence on our drummer Dan’s playing and writing. Dan comes from a heavier background and is an incredible technical drummer; while a lot of what he plays in Veins doesn’t call for that style, he slips some in occasionally, which gives us quite a unique sound.
