Brit alt-rock trio Cane Rouge are poised to release their emotive new EP Lights Out on Friday. We exclusively caught up with vocalist Ant Clarke and he gave this unique track by track breakdown of the EP:
Lights Out [video]
“Lights Out” came to me when I had this melody ringing around my head and I just had to write something to it. It’s a song about aspirations, longing for someone and dealing with loss. For the studio recording we stripped back the intro with just me and an acoustic to capture the true rawness of it. Musically it was probably a turning point for us in terms of writing. We’re immensely proud of this one!
Turbulence
It’s quite funny how turbulence turned out. So, we had a completely different riff and everything was written for the intro. Decided to change it completely on the day (as you do), we’d say it was for the better. Lyrically this is probably the deepest thing I’ve ever written. But it’s essentially a song of hope, being in a place you don’t want to be and a remembrance of when you knock yourself down, you get back up, and things will be better than they ever were.
Reverie
The EP closing track, “Reverie”, begins with the opening riff that it was built around, it goes from being so in your face to this kind of flowing sway. We also have a breakdown for the first time in a Cane Rouge track, lyrically this is about all the what ifs and all the questions about a failing relationship.
