KURO – exclusive EP track by track feature

Unrelenting Scottish alt-metallers KURO have such a powerful sound loaded with biting riffs, pounding beats, and electrifying electronic nuances that bite and cut through. The band’s incoming EP, Circling The Drain, lands Friday 3rd October, and should not be missed. Look out too for their brand new single, “I Hate You”, out this Friday. With all of this in mind, we exclusively caught up with KURO and asked them to give us this unique track by track breakdown of the EP:

Closing In

“Closing In”, I feel, was the starting point for this EP. When Robbie came up with the menacing intro riff we all knew that this was where our sound was flowing. At the time I was going through a very traumatic living situation, and I needed to write these lyrics to journal my feelings of claustrophobia and angst at the time. We all feel Closing in sets the scene for the rest of the EP and it lets listeners know exactly what they’re in for…

No Exit (video below)

This is no doubt my favourite off the EP, and from the start we knew we wanted this to be a single with how it resonated with us.  I wrote this about the highs and lows of being an artist, about how it can be the most cathartic experience and also the most anxiety-inducing, with the whole concept of “finding what you love and letting it kill you” being the chorus focus and how there’s truly no exit from being an artist.

I Hate You (Ft. Laurie Black)

Confessionally I’m a huge fan of cheesy 80s pop, a favourite being Stacy Q’s “Two Of Hearts”. We got together with electronic artist Laurie Black to do an inversion inspired by the iconic “I Need You” vocal sample where we not so subtly used the words “I Hate You”. This song was an excuse to write some heavy chugging riffs with some blunt angsty lyrics.

Insane

Written at a similar time to “Closing In”, Robbie had an idea for something super high energy, riffy with a chorus that just makes you want to dance. We took the opportunity to use the breakdown to get really creative with guitar glitch effects. And really explored how we could combine catchy riffs with dancey beats

Opium

This was a very collaborative track to write, starting from one very Doom-inspired riff and then copied, extended and cut to create new sections. I also experimented a lot with glitched out samples and effects for the verse and chorus to create a darker atmosphere, with fast paced repeating lyrics.”
